History |
Once called Gelstone, Eldridge was a community named after Captain Oliver Eldridge. Eldridge and Gelstone were both members of the governing board of the district and had the place named for them at different times. The mild climate was one of the reasons this was chosen for the site of California Home for the Care and Training of the Feeble Minded, opened in 1891.
